Newton Institute Correspondents

  1. Correspondents in UK Universities - listed alphabetically by institution
  2. Correspondents in other academic institutions - listed alphabetically by institution

Background

At the suggestion of the then National Advisory Board, the Newton Institute established in 2002 a list of correspondents in UK Universities, other academic institutions and R&D groups in industry and commerce. These correspondents act as a channel of communication between the Newton Institute and the mathematical sciences community in the UK. Correspondents are regularly informed about activities of the Institute, and it is their responsibility to ensure that the information is disseminated to the relevant Departments in their institution (especially Departments other than mathematics). Correspondents also provide feedback to the Institute.

Universities and other relevant bodies not yet represented on this list are encouraged to suggest a suitable nominee.

Newton Institute Correspondent duties

The duties of Newton Institute Correspondents can be found here: Duties List.

It is now the intention that the role of the Correspondents will be developed and strengthened. This is to ensure that the Institute continues to meet the expectations of the UK community following the recent disbanding of the National Advisory Board, after a request for a clarification of its role by the EPSRC as one of the conditions for the grant of £9.6 million awarded in 2008. The decision was taken after discussion by all Institute committees, and consultation with Heads of UK Mathematics Departments, the Institute Correspondents, and the learned societies of the Council for Mathematical Sciences.

Chair of Correspondents

The new position of Chair of Correspondents has been established, with nominations being sought from the Correspondents and final selection being made by the learned societies. The appointee is co-opted as a full member of the Management Committee, representing the interests of the national community and contributing to the future direction of the Institute. Professor Caroline Series from the University of Warwick has been appointed the first Chair of Correspondents. Professor Series will serve for the two year term January 2009 - December 2010 and she will chair the annual meeting of Correspondents.

Annual Meeting of Correspondents

This year's meeting was held on 8 June 2010.

Newton Institute Participants willing to speak elsewhere

The Newton Institute maintains a register of participants who are willing to give seminars at other UK institutions. Newton Institute Correspondents may find this register useful when looking for a speaker with particular subject knowledge. Participants willing to speak elsewhere

Newton Institute Correspondents Bulletins - Archive

Newton Institute Correspondents Bulletins are sent in January, May and September each year and will contain information regarding the Newton Institute and its activities. We hope you will find it a useful way of keeping in touch and a helpful source of information to distribute to your colleagues. We will also send you occasional updates on particular topics.
