Adaptive multiscale methods for the atmosphere and ocean

Workshop theme

The physical processes of flow in the ocean and atmosphere are characterised by dynamics at a very broad range of scales. As simulation science progresses, the need for innovative numerical schemes capable of resolving motion at multiple scales becomes ever more important.

This workshop, which is the launch event for the Isaac Newton Institute programme on Multiscale Numerics for the Atmosphere and Ocean, will focus on the challenges posed by simulating multiscale dynamics and in particular on adaptive numerics as a strategy for resolving them.

Presenters are invited to report on numerical advances, but also to be forward looking, particularly with respect to the contribution that participants in the Isaac Newton Institute programme could make to this challenging field.

Following the workshop at the Isaac Newton Institute, the 11th International workshop on IMUM (Multi-scale (Un)-structured mesh numerical Modelling for coastal, shelf and global ocean dynamics) takes place in Delft, The Netherlands between 27 - 31 August 2012.
