we have been made aware of a very convincing phone scam that is focusing on our workshop participants. Participants may be contacted by phone by a firm called Business Travel Management to arrange accommodation for workshops and/or programmes. This includes a request to enter credit card information.
Please note, INI will never contact you over the phone requesting card details. We take all payments via the University of Cambridge Online store https://onlinesales.admin.cam.ac.uk/.

Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences
Ergodic Theory, Geometric Rigidity and Number Theory
5 January to 7 July 2000
Organisers: A Katok (Penn State), G Margulis (Yale), M Pollicott (Manchester)
Introductory lecture series on
"Ergodic Theory, Rigidity and Number Theory''
10-14 January 2000
Provisional Programme | Participants |
The overall programme. The six month programme at the Newton Institute deals with ergodic theory and its recent applications to problems in rigidity of group actions, and number theory. This includes such important developments as the classification of the actions of higher rank groups, unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces and the Oppenheim conjecture. The organisers are A Katok, G Margulis and M Pollicott.
The lectures. The meeting will consist of a series of short courses by specialists in the area, intended to provide an introduction to a general audience.
M Burger (ETH Zurich) | Cohomological aspects of lattices and applications to products of trees |
R Feres (St Louis) | Co-cycle and topological super-rigidity |
H Furstenberg (Jerusalem) | Ergodic theory and the geometry of fractals |
A Katok (Penn State) | Dynamics and ergodic theory of smooth actions of higher-rank abelian groups and lattices in semi-simple Lie groups |
D Kleinbock (Rutgers) | Interactions between homogeneous dynamics and number theory |
In addition, there will be a number of research talks.
Location: The lectures will take place at the Newton Institute, Cambridge.
Future meetings. There will be other meetings associated with the programme: 27-31 March 2000, Rigidity in Dynamics and Geometry; 3-7 April 2000, Ergodic theory and higher rank actions; 3-7 July 2000, Concluding conference.
