PEDAGOGICAL WORKSHOP ON GEOMETRY AND TOPOLOGY OF FLUID FLOWS
Directors: Renzo Ricca (UCL); Victor Yudovich (Rostov)
Programme Organisers: Richard Pelz (Rutgers); Hassan Aref (Illinois); Tsutomu Kambe (Tokyo)
11 - 22 September 2000
This workshop will provide a pedagogical introduction to applications of geometry and topology in the study of fluid flows. Specialists in the field will give a series of lectures on basic mathematical notions and novel techniques useful to tackle outstanding problems in fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics from a geometric and topological viewpoint
H Aref (Dynamical Systems), MA Berger (Topological Magnetohydrodynamics), P Boyland (Topology), T Kambe (Geometric Fluid Mechanics), L Kauffman (Knot Theory), B Khesin (Topological Fluid Mechanics), R Langevin (Differential Geometry), R MacKay (Dynamical Systems), G Misiolek (Differential Geometry), HK Moffatt (Topological Fluid Mechanics), R Pelz (Fluid Flow Singularities), RL Ricca (Topological Fluid Mechanics), A Shnirelman (Euler Equations), E Spiegel (Astrophysics), M Vishik (Euler Equations), C Weber (Knot Theory), V Yudovich (Mathematical Hydrodynamics).
The NATO ASI will take place at the Newton Institute and accommodation for participants will be provided at Wolfson Court. The accommodation package (10-23 September) costs £585, and includes accommodation, breakfast and evening meals plus lunch and refreshments during the days that lectures take place. Limited financial support may be available for those from NATO, Partner countries and Mediterranean Dialogue countries. Numbers will be restricted to about 80 participants.
