On an example of Vafa and Witten, or how to get rid of discrete torsion
In 1994 Vafa and Witten studied an example of a smooth string theory, whose central feature was that it appeared that it had to be compactified on a singular Calabi-Yau 3-fold; a number of ordinary double points seemed unavoidable, and could not be removed in the physical context either by deformation or by blowing up. Subsequently, Aspinwall, Morrison and Grosssuggested that these singularities were intricately related to the existence of a nontrivial element of the Brauer group of this singular space.

We explain how all these ideas come together in a very clear picture, and present a way of removing the singularities by moving to an entirely new space. We also discuss how this could in principle be used in general to get rid of discrete torsion, by way of the SYZ conjecture. Most of the talk is at a relatively elementary level, requiring no knowledge of string theory.

Special varieties and classification theory
Lang's conjectures link geometric, hyperbolic and arithmetic properties of projective complex varieties of general type. We propose here an extension of these conjectures to an arbitrary projective manifold X.

This extension rests on the notion of "special" variety. This class contains rationally connected manifolds and those with kappa = 0. Moreover, we construct the "core" of any X, a fibration c_X: X -> C(X) having general fibre a special variety and base conjecturally and of orbifold general type.

This fibration seems to permit to decompose X according to the dichotomy "special" versus "general type", and leads not only to the above mentioned extension of Lang's conjectures, but also to a simple global view of classification theory.

Stable bundles, difference varieties and divisors on moduli spaces of curves
We do global calculations on moduli spaces of pointed curves to prove the "Minimal Resolution Conjecture" about the graded Betti numbers of general sets of points on any nonhyperelliptic canonically embedded curve. Our results have surprising connections with moduli spaces of vector bundles on curves, difference varieties in Jacobians and geometric divisors on moduli spaces of pointed curves.

Among other things we show that for any curve C, if Q denotes the normal bundle of C in is Jacobian then all exterior powers of Q have a theta divisor which is identified with a suitable difference variety. This answers positively a conjecture of Lazarsfeld. Interest in these bundles comes from Green's conjecture on syzygies of canonical curves which boils down to computing the number of sections of all exterior powers of Q.
