Abstract
In deterministic mutation-selection models of nucleotide sequences, the population mean fitness can be determined using a simple maximum principle. These models show the interesting behaviour of mutation driven error thresholds, where the population rapidly degrades at a critical mutation rate. These error thresholds can be detected using the maximum principle.
