step by step guides

Windows 10 / Windows 8 / Windows 7 / Vista / XP:

Please see the instructions at: https://things.maths.cam.ac.uk/computing/laptops/print_configs/win8print.html

MacOS X:

You may use a bash-script to quickly install and configure all the printers:

  • open a terminal window
  • run this command: curl -s www.newton.ac.uk/print/install | bash

linux:

If your machine uses CUPS (most do!) you may use a bash-script to quickly install and configure all the printers:

  • open a terminal window
  • become root (or use sudo): sudo bash
  • run one of these commands:
    • wget -q -O - www.newton.ac.uk/print/install | bash
    • curl -s www.newton.ac.uk/print/install | bash
    • GET www.newton.ac.uk/print/install | bash

If you don't have any of wget/curl/GET installed, you should be able to download the script in your web-browser by visiting the url: http://www.newton.ac.uk/print/install

If you saved the script as a file named "INSTALL" then you can run it using: sudo bash INSTALL

Android 4.4 / 5.1 / 6.0:

Please see our pictorial guide.

USB stick:

Turn on the printer control panel if it is asleep. Then insert a DOS/FAT-formatted USB stick that contains the file you wish to print into the connector behind the control panel and follow the onscreen instructions.

available printer queues

Please print in black&white if you can. Colour pages are ten times more expensive.

common problems

You see error 0x000006d1 when you try to install a printer on Windows.

Follow the instructions at the end of: https://things.maths.cam.ac.uk/computing/laptops/print_configs/win8print.html

Printing may not work if you are using a VPN.

Our printserver is only accessible from "inside" the Institute but a VPN tunnel may make your machine appear to be somewhere else. If your VPN client has an "allow LAN access" option, enabling it will allow you to print. Otherwise, you must temporarily disconnect the VPN before printing. You may reconnect after the job has been spooled.

Printer goes offline (Windows 7).

Sometimes, the printer is reported to be offline (although it isn't) and jobs stick in the queue. This bug has been reported by many people to Microsoft but has yet to be fixed. The only reliable workaround seems to be to delete all the jobs from the queue, then delete the printer, then reinstall it.
