E_d(d)xR^+ Generalised Geometry and 11D Supergravity
Seminar Room 1, Newton Institute
It is well known that dimensional reductions of eleven-dimensional supergravity have unexpected hidden symmetries. E_d(d)xR^+ genealised geometry provides a unified geometrical formulation of the internal sector of the theory, in which these symmetries appear naturally as structure groups. The construction is exactly analogous to ordinary Riemannian geometry, but with an enlarged tangent space. In particular, using the analogue of the Levi-Civita connection, the bosonic action and equations of motion can be expressed neatly as Einstein gravity for a generalised curvature tensor. Supersymmetry also appears in the process and the fermionic sector can be concisely reformulated in terms of the generalised connection. The talk will review the details of this formalism as well as discussing some explicit examples in particular dimensions.
