HYDRODYNAMIC INTERACTIONS AND PARTICLE SEPARATION

Abstract: Separation of magnetically marked particles has become very popular in the last years because of applications in microbiology and biotechnology. However, in general all the methods in use today are based on the same principle: magnetic field gradients are use to drag tagged particles through the liquid and hidrodynamic forces play a passive, adverse role. Here we propose using a homogeneus rotating magnetic field only to make tagged particles rotate, and performing the actual separation by means of hydrodynamics interactions, which thus play an active role. The method, which was explored theoretically and by means of numerical simulations, lends itself natural to sorting on large scales.
