Abstract: We present results of a quasi-2D experimental investigation of the phase behaviour of a homogeneously thermalized binary mixture of dry particles. As the density of the vibrated granular layer is incrementally increased three distinct phases are uncovered. For low densities the system acts as a binary granular gas. As the density is increased, clusters of one of the species condense within the other and mobile segregated domains form. For higher densities, particles within the segregated domains crystalize. The properties of these distinct segregation phases are characterized by monitoring the following quantities various macroscopic, i.e. at domain level, and microscopic, i.e. at particle level. Self-consistency is found between these measures giving an interesting new insight into phase ordering in granular segregation.
