Defects and Flow in Active Nematic Suspensions

Abstract

The complex flow and director patterns observed in active suspensions are studied using continuum models of active liquid crystal hydrodynamics in two dimensions. We observe that the basic modes of director instability can cause and sustain fluid jets. Statistical features of the flow are analyzed, as a function of activity and elasticity, and compared to experiments.
