Abstract

I shall explain a new approach for the Toledo invariant from the Higgs bundle point of view, coming from group theoretic properties of Hermitian symmetric spaces. This approach covers all cases uniformly, including the exceptional ones. I shall give some applications. Joint work with O. García-Prada and R. Rubio.
