The standard cosmological model
Wednesday 06 September 2006, 11:30-12:30
Seminar Room 1, Newton Institute
Abstract
In the last few years a Standard Model of Cosmology has emerged which describes obervations from the Cosmic Microwave Background, galaxy redshift surveys and distant supernova. This model assumes Einstein gravity, the standard model of particle physics, non-baryonic dark matter and a mysterious negative pressure dark energy which dominates the energy budget. In this talk I will review the observational basis of this model, discuss its problems, in particular the dark matter and dark energy problems, and point to future tests.
