Confined steady states in binary fluid convection

Abstract

Direct numerical simulations of binary fluid convection in moderate and large aspect ratio containers reveal the existence, for supercritical Rayleigh numbers and negative separation ratio, of localized states of stationary convection. We will show examples of such states for $^3$He-$^4$He and water-ethanol mixtures. The properties and origin of these states will be also described.
