Abstract

Some of the most interesting and long-standing evolutionary questions concern relationships among ancient lineages. Molecular sequence data have not really provided the anticipated clear-cut answers to these questions. In general relationships that were cloaked in uncertainty based on traditional comparative anatomy remain uncertain when subjected to molecular approaches. I will present an overview of some of the difficulties associated with estimating relationships among ancient vertebrate lineages based on sequence comparisons.
