Abstract
Over that past year our team has developed a portfolio of technologies to address privacy issues in smart metering. These were inspired by cryptographic techniques well established in research, but unheard of in the domain of embedded systems security. In this talk I chart our journey from the design of the techniques, to our experiences implementing them to be part of a real smart meter. Considerations such as memory footprint, stateless interfaces, and compatibility with communications protocols, not mere security properties, ended up being the deciding factor.
