Using Storage to Control Uncertainty in Power Systems

This talk will discuss a simple probabilistic model exploring how storage can be effectively used to aid the operation of an electricity network with uncertain energy inputs. What is the best way of scheduling conventional units in advance to make optimum use of the variable and hard to predict renewable resource?

The solution to this problem will depend, amongst other things, on

oThe quality of the renewable prediction process

oThe capacity of the store

oThe efficiency and maximum release rate of the store

oRamp constraints and delayed reaction of conventional generation

oThe risk appetite of the network operator
