The mathematical modelling and analysis of water waves poses rich challenges. The governing equations for water waves are a widely accepted model and they have been the subject of research for over 150 years. However, the equations are highly nonlinear and the level of difficulty is so great that theory has yet to scratch the surface of the subject. The solutions to the equations that describe fluid motion are elusive and whether they even exist in the most general case is one of the most difficult unanswered questions in mathematics. This summer school will introduce the beginning researcher to a range of mathematical issues in the theory of water waves, including the initial value problem, singularities, shallow water hydrodynamics, numerics, mapping techniques, variational principles, effect of topography and modulation.

The Registration Package includes admission to all seminars, lunches and refreshments on the days that lectures take place (Wednesday – Friday), wine reception and a BBQ, but does not include other meals or accommodation.
The Accommodation Package includes a registration fee, bed and breakfast accommodation from the evening of Tuesday 5 August 2014 to breakfast on Saturday 9 August 2014, together with lunches and refreshments during the days that lectures take place (Wednesday – Friday). The BBQ is also included, but no other evening meals.
Accommodation in single study bedrooms with shared facilities, breakfast and lunches are provided at Wolfson Court, adjacent to the Institute.
Participants on the Accommodation Package or Registration Package, including organisers and speakers, are automatically included in this event. For all remaining participants who would like to attend, such as Visiting Fellows, programme participants or their guests, the above charge will apply.
Lunch will be served at Wolfson Court in the Cafeteria from 12:30 to 13:30 on days that lectures take place.
Participants are free to make their own arrangements for dinner.
The BBQ will take place at 19:30 on Thursday 7 August at Moller Centre. Please see the menu for details. Participants on the Accommodation Package or Registration Package, including organisers and speakers, are automatically included in this event. All remaining participants are encouraged to attend for the price of £47 each.
