Some old and new moving boundary problems for Hele-Shaw flow

Abstract: 
When a less viscous fluid is injected into a more viscous fluid in a Hele-Shaw, the interface between the fluids is unstable.  This is the Saffman-Taylor instability which can give rise to a striking pattern formation at the interface.  The usual model for this type of flow is a two-dimensional moving boundary problem which is amenable to complex variable methods, especially in the special case in which surface tension is ignored.  For non-standard geometries progress can be made via numerical simulation, using a level set formulation for example.  Some recent experimental, analytical and numerical studies of non-standard moving boundary problems in Hele-Shaw flow will be discussed.  This is joint work with Liam Morrow, Tim Moroney and Michael Dallaston.
