At its meeting on 12 June 2008, the Management Committee approved the proposal to disband the National Advisory Board and strengthen the role of the Correspondents. It agreed to co-opt an independent Chair of Correspondents who would be recognised as the Correspondents' spokesperson, and chair the annual meetings at the Institute. This person should be committed to the continuing success of the Institute, have the confidence of the UK community and bring wide experience of national issues so that they can make a full contribution; it would also be highly desirable if they helped the gender balance of the Management Committee. For details of current membership see www.newton.ac.uk/mancom.html
Correspondents are requested to consult amongst themselves and with colleagues and come forward with nominations for the Chair, to reach director@newton.ac.uk BY FRIDAY 10 OCTOBER. All names will go forward to the Executive Secretaries of the LMS, the IMA, the RSS, the ORS and the E(dinburgh)MS, who will agree a name to be forwarded to the Management Committee, for co-option for three years from 1 January 2009.
We are delighted that Dr Ben Mestel, our Correspondent at the Open University, will join us in November as Deputy Director, succeeding Dr Robert Hunt.
On behalf of the Scientific Steering Committee, John Ball has approved the proposal that the Research Director of ICMS should be ex officio in attendance at the SSC, with the Director or the Deputy Director of the Newton Institute similarly ex officio on the Programmes Committee of ICMS. Howard Covington, Chief Executive of New Star Asset Management, has been appointed as Chair of the Management Committee; he will bring a challenging independence to the committee, which we welcome.
The report of the Annual Meeting of Correspondents on 2 June can be found at www.newton.ac.uk/ucbulletins/corrmeeting2008.pdf. The Director’s presentation can be found at www.newton.ac.uk/ucbulletins/correspondents2008.pdf.
Reminders on programme and workshop announcements, Correspondents’ web page; short visits, seminars at your institution:
This bulletin is sent in January, May and September each year. We hope you find it a useful way of keeping in touch and a helpful source of information to distribute to your colleagues. As always, the Director is very happy to receive comments or suggestions regarding the Institute and its activities, including possibilities for future programmes: david.wallace@newton.ac.uk. He or the Deputy Director would be very pleased to visit your institution to talk about the Institute, what's happening here, and to hear your views.
