The appointment of Professor John Toland as the next Director of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences has been announced. He will succeed Professor Sir David Wallace who has served as Director since October 2006. For further details see http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/news/dp/2011011101
This year's annual meeting of Correspondents will be held on 15th June 2011. Your involvement would be greatly valued. Invitations will be issued closer to the time, but in the meantime please keep the date free.
Naomi Clark is leaving us at the beginning of February to take up as position at Addenbrooke?s Hospital with the Institute of Metabolic Science. Many visitors to the Institute will have met Naomi on Reception and we pass on our best wishes for the future. Aine De Lacy will work on Reception temporarily until a permanent replacement is appointed.
As you know, the Institute maintains a list of Correspondents, who act as focal points for communication between the Institute and our stakeholders in the scientific community. We should like to ensure the list is up to date, so we would be grateful if you would check that the information we have for your institution is correct. Please see the Correspondent's webpage. Changes can be sent to deputy-director@newton.ac.uk Thanks to all who have recently notified us of any changes and corrections.
In November 2010 the Institute co-hosted an Open for Business event under the auspices of the Mathematical and Statistical Approaches to Climate Modelling and Prediction programme. The event took place at the Willis Building in the City of London, and featured an scientific overview from Professor Tim Palmer and two panel discussions, one concentrating on climate science, and the other on the economic and political issues.
Approximately 250 people attended (Business 149, Academic 176 and Government Departments 24). The event was rated as ?Excellent, very clear and knowledgeable, high profile panel added both interest and highlighted the importance of the issues? and ?Excellent, probably one of the best events I have attended in the last two years. The range of expertise that was gathered in one place was exceptional. It would be good to see some further practical activities emerge from this event?.
The presentation from Professor Tim Palmer and both panel sessions can be found on the programme webpage

This bulletin is sent in January, May and September each year. We hope you find it a useful way of keeping in touch and a helpful source of information to distribute to your colleagues. As always, the Director is very happy to receive comments or suggestions regarding the Institute and its activities, including possibilities for future programmes: david.wallace@newton.ac.uk. He or the Deputy Director, Dr Ben Mestel, b.mestel@newton.ac.uk would be very pleased to visit your institution to talk about the Institute, what's happening here, and to hear your views.
