Workshop theme

The massive integration of renewable energy sources within the electric power system calls for an in-depth revision of the way the system is operated. Indeed, cheap renewable energy sources are typically located away from the consumption centers, have little or no inertia, are often connected at lower voltage levels, and are driven by complex spatiotemporal stochastic weather processes. At the bulk level, this leads to extremely fast and difficult-to-predict changes in the net demand, resulting in needs for faster frequency control, more efficient power balancing mechanisms, and more effective ways of controlling the flows within the interconnected transmission system. At the lower voltage levels of distribution networks, this leads to novel needs for voltage and power flow control and even the emergence of stability issues. It is also necessary to revisit the way operation and control of transmission and distribution systems is coordinated. Moreover, the future power system must integrate electric vehicles, smart-buildings, micro-grids and prosumer communities, and strengthen the interactions with other critical infrastructures, such as transportation, water, gas, and ICT.

In order to maintain a desired level of reliability of electricity supply, while minimizing the socio-economic costs of achieving this, a combination of opportunities should be synergized. These concern electric storage, demand flexibility, power electronics, sensors, and market mechanisms, and they will strongly rely on recent progresses in methodological areas pertaining to data analytics, stochastic and distributed control, dynamic contracts, inference, learning and approximate optimal control, mathematical programming, and multilevel methods.

The workshop will provide an overview of recent developments and open questions in these areas. Possible topics within the workshop include:

  1. Reliability and Security of bulk power systems: modeling of uncertainties and threats in operational time-scales; reliability and security targets and criteria for short-term decision making; principles and methods for coordination between day-2, day-1, intra-day, real-time markets and TSO decision-making; multi-TSO issues.
  2. Coordinated operation and control of micro-grids, distribution systems, and transmission systems: hierarchical and distributed control approaches; crowdsourcing; data and model sharing; performance verification.
  3. Socio-economic incentives for producers and consumers: energy markets; flexibility and demand response markets; reliability markets; day-ahead vs. intraday vs. real-time markets; fairness vs. efficiency; tariffs and compensation mechanisms; cost/benefit distribution.
  4. Interconnected infrastructures (transportation, water, gas, communications, power): models and solutions for handling cyber-security and adverse behaviors; resilience vs. reliability vs. security.
  5. Integration of electric vehicles, smart buildings, storage devices, power electronics, and smart appliances: modeling issues; possible uses for balancing and flow control; provision of inertia and reactive power for voltage-, angle- and frequency-stability.
  6. Coordination of operation, asset management, and system planning: suitable and tractable time-scale decompositions; coherency of decisions at different time-scales; models and proxies of shorter time-scale behaviors within longer time-scale decision-making models.

The Accommodation Package includes a registration fee, bed and breakfast accommodation at Churchill College from the evening of Sunday 6th January 2019 to breakfast on Saturday 12th January 2019, together with lunches and refreshments during the days that lectures take place (Monday - Friday). The formal dinner is also included, but no other evening meals.

Participants on the Accommodation Package or Registration Package, including organisers and speakers, are automatically included in this event. For all remaining participants who would like to attend, such as programme participants, the above charge will apply.


Accommodation in single study bedrooms with shared facilities and breakfast are provided at Churchill College,



Lunch timings and location will be confirmed with timetable.

Participants are free to make their own arrangements for dinner.

The Formal Dinner will take place Wednesday 9th January at Christ's College. Participants on the Accommodation Package or Registration Package, including organisers and speakers, are automatically included in this event.
