Participants may be contacted by phone by a firm called Business Travel Management to arrange accommodation for workshops and/or programmes.  This includes a request to enter credit card information.

Please note, INI will never contact you over the phone requesting card details. We take all payments via the University of Cambridge Online store

Workshop Theme

Ice-Fluid Interaction will, first and foremost, serve as a focal point for international collaboration between polar scientists and practitioners. It will target the polar research community ― especially mathematicians, physicists, engineers and experimentalists, to provide an opportunity to share knowledge about the science of the polar zones that relate primarily, in this case, to the countless interactions that occur between sea-ice and the underlying ocean. It is intended that other floating ice types, e.g. lake ice and river ice, and glacial ice will also form part of the discussions, where fluid interactions and exchanges are present. The central aim is to identify key science questions that must be addressed by theoretical and experimental programmes in order to advance our understanding of ice processes.

The topics of the workshop are divided into the following sessions: mathematical models of the effects of physical and geophysical phenomena on the behaviour of sea ice, including those that express how ocean waves and swell propagate in ice fields and can alter its morphology; theories of linear and nonlinear hydroelastic waves, especially applied to floating ice; topics that relate to sea ice heterogeneity, e.g. electromagnetic, acoustic and ocean wave scattering; modelling the dynamics of fields of sea ice; ice growth and ablation, including phase transitions and sea ice as a mushy layer; the formation of sea ice morphology and melt ponds; sea ice constitutive equations and the relationship between internal ice forces and the deformation of ice covers; granular flow and discrete element models of sea ice; and other ice types, including glacial ice and river ice.

Please note members of Cambridge University are welcome to turn up and sign in as a non-registered attendee on the day(s) during the workshop and attend the lecture(s). Please note that we cannot provide you with any support including name badge, meals or accommodation.

The Registration Package includes admission to all seminars, lunches and refreshments on the days that lectures take place (Monday - Friday), wine reception and formal dinner, but does not include other meals or accommodation.

Participants on the Registration Package, including organisers and speakers, are automatically included in this event. For all remaining participants who would like to attend, such as programme participants, the above charge will apply.


Unfortunately we do not have any accommodation to offer so all successful applicants will need to source their own accommodation.  Please see the Hotels Combined website for a list of local hotels and guesthouses.



Lunch will be served at Wolfson Court in the Cafeteria from 12:30 to 13:30 on days that lectures take place.

  • Registration Package participants should present their badge as payment for their meal
  • Those issued with a blue Institute door entrance card can add money onto the card via the Porters' Lodge at Wolfson Court
  • Other participants must purchase their meal using their dining card via the Porters' Lodge (forms can be found on the registration desk or at the Porters' Lodge)

Evening Meal

Participants are free to make their own arrangements for dinner.

The Formal Dinner will take place at on Thursday 5th October 2017 at Robinson College. Participants on the Registration Package, including organisers and speakers, are automatically included in this event.
